Season 29 Wrap-Up

After only four seasons at the helm of a franchise that had been long stuck in mediocrity, thedream42 took the San Diego Magic to the second World Series in franchise history, this time defeating the upstart San Jose Chinchillas in five games.

Few would have predicted the number five seeded Magic to meet the number four seeded Chinchillas in the World Series. Although the Chinchillas (79-83) came in as the higher seed, they came into the playoffs with a losing record in the regular season. The Magic (104-58) grabbed a Wild Card slot despite having the second best regular season record in the competitive NL. Nonetheless, the Chinchillas got hot just in time, first sweeping the number 5 seeded Ottawa Dragons, before shocking the 120-win Trenton Troubadours in 4 games and the 109-win Santa Fe Tigers in the ALCS. The Magic were really only pushed once during their playoff run. They took out the New York Skyscrapers in four games before needing all five games of the NLCS to defeat the top-seeded Fresno Mendozas and then defeating the Cincinnati Redlegs in six games to claim the NL pennant.

The Magic started the World Series with a Game 1 win after scoring the game winning runs on the top of the ninth inning. After dropping Game 2 in the late innings to the Chinchillas, the Magic ran the tables to claim their first Gehrig World Series title. In the end, the Chinchillas were done in by late inning scoring by the Magic. Indeed, three of the four Magic wins came off San Diego scoring the winning runs in the seventh inning or later.

Congratulations to thedream42 on the World Series championship and a great franchise turnaround!

Season 28 Wrap-Up

In one of the most surprising playoff runs in Gehrig history, the Ottawa Dragons defeated the Fresno Mendozas in the World Series to clinch the franchise's third title, but first since Season 7, in Gehrig.

The World Series saw the first match-up between two Wild Card teams since Season 7. While the Mendozas are accustomed to playing late in the season (this was the Gehrig-leading 9th World Series appearance representing the NL), this was their first showing in the Series from the Wild Card slot. Ottawa, on the other hand, was making their first showing in the Series since Season 7. The Dragons got off to a fast start, easily winning the first two games behind solid hitting and pitching, outscoring the Mendozas 12-1. The Mendozas responded with two straight wins in Ottawa to even the series at two games a piece. Alas, it was not to be for the Mendozas. Ottawa regained their composure and shellacked Fresno over the last two games of the series, outscoring the Mendozas 17-3 in Games 5 and 6, to claim the Season 28 title.

The Dragons, in only their third season under selvendar, made the playoffs as the top Wild Card in the American League with a solid 92-70 regular season record. The Dragons got off to a slow start in the playoffs, dropping their first two games to the Tucson Junkies before winning the next three, clinching the pass to the ALDS thanks to an R.J. Torres three-run blast on the top of the 11th inning.

The Dragons needed more RJ Torres magic, this time a game-winning HR in the 9th inning of Game 5, to defeat the AL top seed Santa Fe Tigers to reach the ALCS. From there, it was all downhill for the Dragons. Riding strong pitching from Harry Guerrero and Wilkin Owen they dispatched the Rochester Red Royal North Stars in five games to reach the World Series.

Ottawa personified the feeling that once you reach the playoffs anything is possible. Through clutch pitching and hitting they caught lightning in a bottle and ran away with the playoffs.

Congratulations to selvendar on his first World Series championship!

Notes:

This is selvendar first World Series championship in Gehrig and in Hardball Dynasty.

Season 27 Wrap Up

For the third year in a row the World Series was decided in a Game 7, with the top-seeded AL Santa Fe Tigers (105-57) defeating the NL two seed St. Louis Jalowitzians (102-60) to claim kevinbigham's second World Series championship in Gehrig.

Santa Fe got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the Series by winning both home games, but the Jalowitzians bounced back and won the next two games in St. Louis by outscoring the Tigers 17-5. Santa Fe bounced back and stole Game 5 to give them a 3-2 Series lead. Despite a three-run lead in Game 6 at home, the Tigers gave up four runs in the top of the 7th inning and that was enough for the Jalowitzians to even up the Series at three games a piece. Unfortunately for St. Louis, Santa Fe's bats came alive in Game 7, pummeling the Jalowitzians pitchers for 19 runs and 20 hits. World Series MVP Marc Bennett (0.290 with 7 R, 11 RBI, 4 HR, and 1 SB) continued to cement himself as one of Gehrig's elite players.

Despite having a great run in the playoffs that saw St. Louis defeat the NL top-seed Fresno Mendozas to claim their second NL pennant in a row, the Jalowitzians fell again one win short of a title. Tigers GM franco8305 has assembled a strong squad and will undoubtedly have the Tigers fighting for another shot at a World Series championship soon enough.

On the other side, kevinbigham's squad has now racked up five consecutive 100+ win seasons and has shown no signs of slowing down.

Congratulations to kevinbigham on his second Gehrig World Series championship!

This is kevinbigham second World Series championship in Gehrig and in Hardball Dynasty.
